More arrests in Valhalla Park

The three arrests, on Sunday afternoon, was the result of information gathered by the Safety and Security Information Management Service (SSIMS). One was linked to the events on Friday, 12 September 2025 where Law Enforcement officers were attacked following a collision in the area. Read more below:
Eleven persons are appearing in court today, Monday, 15 September 2025 in connection with the attack on Law Enforcement officers in Valhalla Park on Friday, 12 September.
A LEAP vehicle hit three persons after the driver lost control while pursuing an armed suspect who was pointing a firearm at the vehicle.
Following the initial arrests and recovery of items stolen from the Law Enforcement vehicle during the ensuing melee, the Safety and Security Information Management Services (SSIMS) received more information on Sunday, 14 September, that one of the cellphones stolen in the attack had been sold at a known drug house in Kalksteenfontein.
A raid on the house in a joint operation with SAPS and City agencies resulted in SAPS arresting a suspect for the possession of mandrax. He also confirmed that he had been in possession of the phone, but it had been sold by his brother.
The SSIMS team received additional information of two armed men with suspected gang links, walking in the street where Friday's events took place. They responded, and when the suspects saw the officers, they fled into a nearby house, but were quickly apprehended.
The suspects, aged 22 and 29 were both found in possession of firearms and ammunition. It later emerged that the firearms had been reported stolen in Soweto and Kraaifontein respectively.
'The events in Valhalla Park over the weekend must be condemned in the strongest terms, and the City will oppose bail for those arrested in connection with the attack on our officers. The collision was an accident, and our Law Enforcement Department has reached out to the individuals who were injured. The response of bystanders after the accident can never be justified. I want to thank those who have come forward with information that led to the arrests and recovery of City assets, but also the arrest on Sunday of two brazen gunmen who were picked up before they reached their intended targets. Positive collaboration with communities is how we rid our streets and communities of criminals,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
In general enforcement efforts over the past week:
- Law Enforcement officers arrested 188 suspects and issued 6 738 notices for various offences
- Metro Police officers arrested 43 suspects and issued 2 444 notices for traffic and by-law offences. In one of their latest successes, officers arrested five suspects in Lavender Hill on Sunday, 14 September. The driver of a vehicle refused to stop, and when officers managed to pull him over, they recovered a pistol with five rounds of ammunition, as well as an imitation firearm and two blank rounds.
- Traffic officers recorded 44 904 traffic violations and made 33 arrests – 20 for driving under the influence of alcohol, five for reckless and negligent driving and eight on a range of other charges. Staff impounded 208 public transport vehicles and executed 1 839 warrants of arrest.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) recorded 1 678 incidents over the weekend, including 70 incidents of assault; 44 incidents of domestic violence, and 51 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
